Cambodia - Battambang

Battambang, and what to do there

Battambang are Cambodia's second largest city, located between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, its a town often overlooked by tourists, and that's really a shame, cause its a city with many things to see, From the infamous bamboo train to the overwhelming sight at the Batcave, when millions of bats leave their cave at the same time. Moreover there's a lot of interesting ancient temples.

In battambang i also have a really "one in a million" Guide/driver, he alone is worth the whole visit, cause he enthusiastic gives stories about the Pol Pot era, and how he survived it, unlike some of his family.
Contact: Philay Ob, on facebook

Pointers to Visit:
First of all, there's no way around Bat Cave, and its located on mount Sampeou, (Killing Cave)
But there's so much more, like Mini Angkor (Banan Temple) Bamboo train, also Angkor Wat if your in Siem Reap,
But there's other things to see there, like Floating Village, Mount Kulen, and iófcause Night Marked

Mount Sampeou

Mount Sampeou is located around 12 km outside Battambang, and is definitely a place to Visit, you get almost 4 in one there. cause the mountain provides you with Batcave, Killing Cave, The temple on top, and the face of Budda carved in the mountain.

Arriving there, don't worry when your driver stops far under the mountain top, cause thats how far the Tuk Tuk can go, there's a lot of motorcycles that will bring you around to the cave and temple and pick you up again for just a dollar. But of course you can walk up the staircase your selv if that's your liking, be aware its a tough climb.

Bamboo Train

The bamboo train is a relic from the Khmer Rouge years of genocide, the gondola-like train was testament to locals’ ingenuity to providing them traveling during those terrible years. The country’s railroad system was abandoned in the 1970s during the war. Almost a decade later, prober trains began to run again, though the persistence of guerilla fighting meant its infrastructure was in tatters. Later, it became more of a curiosity than a transport service, attracting thousands of international tourists who simply want to experience the Bamboo Train’s famous bumpy outdoor ride. The ride is nothing special, although it's fun to see them strip the train apart when a oncoming train appears. at the end station you will just find a few sheds with a bit of tourist stuff, and some cute kids selling water and soda's
As i said nothing special, but i still think is is a thing to try if you have the time.

Ancient Temples
Wat Banan &
Wat Ek Phnom

If you did not just arrive from Siem reap, these temples are great sights, they are sort of mini Angkor, I cant choose one from the other, Wat Banan has a beautifull (but long) stair way, Ek Phnom stairs not as nice, but the temples are equally nice. so why not visit both ?

Banan temple can be crowded, mostly with locals
Ek Phnom if a little further away, about 15 km from the city

A small Fisherman village at the outskirts of Battambang, not on any tourist maps or anything, your driver need to know about it, it's a small cosy place to walk around se the kids plat and the daily life of the fisher families.
Bring your own drinks cause theres no shops to find around.

In and around Battambang

In the city there's also a lot to do and see, i admit it misses a night marked as Siem Reap has, so evenings can be a little quiet, but then you can go to Nary's learning kitchen, it's a great small restaurant, with really good and cheap food, and if you get the urge to learn to cook your favorite dish, you can book a time and get in the kitchen to learn it, price for this is 10 Us.
In the day time you can visit the local marked, buy a fresh fish or a pair of jeans, or you can go to the Crocodile farm and learn how they breed ned crocodiles, you can even get to hold one of the small ones if you dare.
There's also a few nice temples in the city, and just on the outskirts you can find Chili fields and the Cambodian version of The golden gate bridge.
