Cambodia - Siem Reap

Siem Reap, and what to do there

Siem Reap, the "capital" of the north Cambodia's, the name means Siams Defeat, a bit ironic as the fact is that Thailand in 1704 defeated Cambodia, and controlled Siem Reap from then all the way up til 1904.
Even today the city (read Angkor Wat) gives tension between the two countries, especially from the Thai side, many Thai's really dislike Cambodia, and the Khmer people, because they got their temple back!

In the 13 Century, Siem Reap was the largest city in the world, and were probably home to more than
1 million people, But the French, Thai's, Chinese and Cambodia itself, changed that from 13 century till today, so now it's just a big Village, trying to find it's own feets.
In 1992, UNESCO designated Angkor as a World Heritage site. and just a few years ago "Lonely Planet" made Angkor Wat the most important place to visit in the world, succiding places like the Chinese Wall and the Pyramids of Giza.

Pointers to Visit:
First of all, theres no way around Angkor Wat if your in Siem Reap,
But there's other things to see there, like Floating Village, Mount Kulen, and iófcause Night Marked

Angkor Wat

Kong Suryavarman 2. began in the start of the 12. century The construction of Angkor Wat, He dedicated the city to the hindu god Vishnu., and it was to be his state capital.
Historians of today claims Kong Suryavarman 2, to be the most King of Cambodia ever, and at his time Cambodia ruled big parts of Vietnam, Thailand and Laos.
Angkor consists of many different temples, the most Famous one of cause Angkor Wat, the symbol of Cambodia, that decorate both their flag and bills. But also Wat Ta Prohm is really famous after it played a major role in the Tomb raider movie.
My Suggestion is to buy a 3 day tour, but only use the first and the last day, in order not to get temple overload. do something else in between. but be sure to book same driver, cause it's will be difficult for you remember the names of what you have already seen.
(look up Sarath Gim on facebook, he's a good and trustworthy guide/driver)

Floading Village
Chong Kneas

There are 4 different Floading Villages, Chong Kneas, are the one close to Siem Reap, the others can be found if you take the boat either to Battambang or to Phnom Penh.
It is a great place to visit, very exciting and fascinating, love to se the kids sailing around it small washing tubs, with their Snakes, trying to earn a buck. There's schools and even a police station.
Only thing i do not really like, is the claim, that none of the money, from the rather expensive boat ticket, goes to the community. That's just not right, and are also the reason that you will be asked to donate either rice or pencils to the school, and that's hard to turn down. But really if 25% of the "taxi boat" income went to the community, this would not be necessary!

Mount Kulen
(National Park)

Mount Kulen, or Phnom Kulen is worth the drive, its located about 30 Km north of Angkor.
There's a lot to see there, from underwater temple walls to a giant reclining Buddha. Remember to bring bathing clothes, cause you can swim (or just cool off in the heat) under and over the big waterfall.
It's a playground for the locals, and you will see a lot more of these than tourists !
There's a fee on 20 Us$ to enter the park, and to the best of my knowledge, you have to pay that up front, so i always give the money to my driver (the one i trust, Sarath Gim) so he pick up the ticket the night before.

Night Marked

Siem Reap's Night marked is a really cool place to spend your evenings, lots and lots of great as well as bad restaurants, it might be the most touristy place in Cambodia, but that doesn't really matter, as long as you choose your restaurant with care, do not go to the expensive ones, but choose a cheap one that also have Khmer guests.
Be sure to try the instant made Ice cream on the streets as well as the fresh made smoothies. Its so good ! If shopping there remember to bargain hard, cause the prices in the shops are a lot higher than in the rest of the city.
For those who like to get a few beers, theres of cause also a pub street at the night marked

In and around Siem Reap

Beside the above, there's a few temples in the city, nothing spectacular, but still ok to visit, you can also choose to go to a handicraft factory, that pretty nice to visit, but apart from that there's not a lot to see in the town. What i suggest if you have an extra day, would be a countryside tuk tuk tour, go see the butterfly farm, and landmine musee, take stops on the way, and se the fishermen providing for their family, stop at a chili field ecc. ask your driver to do a good countryside tour with stops on the Farm and Museum.
